FAQ
What is a CXP?
An Alkira Cloud Exchange Point (CXP) is part of the Alkira platform and is a cloud-based Point of Presence (PoP) available anywhere in the Cloud Availability Zones globally.
What happens if there is no Cloud Exchange Point in the market I want to connect to or from?
Alkira CXPs are available anywhere in the Cloud Available Zones. If the market is outside the Cloud Availability Zones, there are other options available. Please contact [email protected] to discuss.
How long does it take to set up Astrotel IP Transit Over Cloud?
If an Alkira CXP is already in place at the required end points, Astrotel IP Transit Over Cloud can be provisioned in a few hours.
If an Alkira CXP is not yet in place at the required end points, this can typically be done within 2-3 working days.
How do I connect to the Alkira CXP?
There are two options to connect. Either by IP Sec or AWS Direct Connect or the equivalent from MS Azure or Google Cloud Platform.
The simplest method of connecting remote sites to IP Transit Over Cloud is by using IPsec tunnels over the Internet created using IPsec connectors. IPsec tunnels are provisioned at each remote site router and terminated at the geographically closest Alkira Cloud Exchange Point.
IPsec or Internet Protocol Security is an internet protocol that authenticates and encrypts the packets of data to provide secure encrypted communication between two points A and B. It is used in virtual private networks (VPNs). IPsec is a standards-based protocol and establishes mutual authentication between two points using cryptographic keys. IPsec uses cryptographic security services to protect communications over Internet Protocol (IP) networks.
IPsec is used for communicating data packets securely over a large public WAN (mainly Internet). The solution gains its benefits from the fact that it can be easily adapted without making any changes in the attached peers. The routers on both ends only need to be IPsec enabled.
Alternatively, it is possible to connect to Astrotel IP Transit Over Cloud using AWS Direct Connect or the equivalent service Microsoft Azure Express Route or Google Cloud Platform Interconnect.
The client orders an AWS Direct Connect from their account and then Astrotel orchestrates adding the AWS Direct Connect to the Alkira CXP as a dedicated connection.
What is the SLA on the service?
Alkira provides a written 99.9% uptime guarantee and in fact has achieved a 100% uptime over the period of 5 years in operation.
Alkira is a high speed, low latency Network with the same performance as the Cloud.
Latency is dependent on the which Cloud Availability zones are being connected via Astrotel IP Transit Over Cloud. Latency can be estimated at https://clm.kentik.com/.
Do I need to have 4 Connectors?
No you can choose to have 2 or 4 Connectors to each Alkira CXP. 4 Connectors are offered as the standard as this is the most commonly requested configuration for diverse path redundancy purposes.
What if I want more than 2 Alkira CXPs?
You may want more than 2 Alkira CXPs if you require more than 2 end points or want additional redundancy. Please contact us at [email protected] if you require more than 2 Alkira CXPs and we can advise on the best solution.
What happens if I go over the Data Allowance?
Once the Data Allowance is exceeded, excess usage charges apply. Contact us at [email protected] for more information.
What happens if I want to increase or decrease the Package I have subscribed to?
Each package is offered on a 12 or 24 month contract. You can trade up to a larger package at any time. If you would like to trade down to a package, we will apply a formula to determine the length of the contract still to run and the cost associated.
What redundancy is built into the solution?
Each Cloud region has 2 or 3 Availability Zones. Alkira CXPs operate across two availability zones in each region, so each Alkira CXP has built in redundancy unless all availability zones are down in a region.
Additional CXP redundancy is also available if a Cloud region goes down by adding an additional CXP in another Cloud region. For more information contact us at [email protected].
The solution includes 4 Connectors to provide diverse path redundancy in connecting to IP Transit Over Cloud.
Can I add firewalls to the IP Transit Over Cloud service?
Yes, next generation Firewalls can be added to Astrotel IP Transit Over Cloud. Firewalls from Fortinet, Palo Alto, Checkpoint and Cisco are supported. Firewalls can be purchased directly or BYO Licence is also available
Can I add Load Balancers to Astrotel IP Transit Over Cloud?
Yes- F5 Load Balancers can be added to Astrotel IP Transit Over Cloud. F5 virtualised load balancers can be purchased directly or BYO Licence is also available.
